Looking For JavaScript Developer Opinions, Suggestions

Okay, I don’t post here hardly at all - never have the time, and not even sure what fits in to the tumblr ecosystem. But I figured what the hell, I’ll put something out and see what happens.

I’ve played with a few of the big JavaScript libraries out there - Prototype, Dojo, jQuery, and MooTools explicitly. I’ve used the first three in professional work, and MooTools on a hobby project; I’m not an expert in any of them, but I used them well enough to get a decent feel for them.

I’m currently using jQuery at work, and while it’s not exactly bad per se, it’s missing one thing that the other three have that really makes me a happy coder: object declaration functionality. On one hand, I completely understand; jQuery is focused on a plugin-based architecture, and it uses a more functional model than object oriented. I still like using objects for a lot of JavaScript though, like representing various page components that I’m scripting, for example.

Now, defining objects by hand in JavaScript is hardly a monumental task, but it is definitely a little different if you’re coming from a Java or C# background like mine. It’s not any better or any worse necessarily, but it’s definitely different. That’s why I like the object declaration stuff provided by Prototype, Dojo, and MooTools — they may not overtly mimic the languages I’m familiar with, but they do a good job of hiding the differences.

So, here’s what I want to know: Out of the JavaScript libraries/plugins/whatever that you’ve used, which one had an object declaration syntax that you were comfortable working with? Or, like with Dojo, maybe it was more akin to a packaging/module system; if you have something for that too, I’ll run with that.

Alright — let’s see how this tumblr thing plays out; anyone out there? ;)

Like Glass Update

Okay, straight to the point:

Like Glass is no longer being published through H and E Media. The company has been going through some changes over the past year or so, and they’re currently going through further changes that have allowed me to consider other options.

I don’t have a plan at this point, but I’m going to look at the various possibilities over the remainder of the holidays and see where to go from there.

In all honesty, the two main ideas I’m looking at are either self-publishing again or simply doing nothing with it – at least, nothing special. If I don’t self-publish, then I may well release it here as either an eBook download (probably just PDF; we’ll see) or as an online eBook, maybe released as a serial to give people an excuse to come back to the site more frequently.

I would like to thank the staff at H and E Media. It’s been an interesting ride to say the least, and while it didn’t pan out like we all would’ve hoped, at least they saw enough in the novel to invest their time and money into trying to make something out of it.
